Trippet Stones

Stone Circle, Cornwall

The stones in this lovely circle are taller than average for circles in Cornwall. Only eight stones remain of what were probably twenty-eight in a circle 33m (108 feet) in diameter. They range in height between 1.2m (4 feet) and 1.6 (5 feet 2 inches), and are quite even-spaced at 3.7m (12-foot) intervals around the perimeter of the circle. The name Trippet derives from the common belief that the stones are the petrified bodies of girls who were punished for dancing on the Sabbath. Another stone circle, the Stripple Stones, is barely visible along the horizon to the ENE, but the opposite is not possible.
