Almost 80 metre long stone row on the slopes of Buttern Hill, near to the source of the river Fowey in the midst of northern Bodmin Moor.

The row runs in a NNE to SSW alignment, from SX16938158 to SX16958165. The stones are on average less than half a metre tall, are spaced at about 3.5 metres from each other.

Update October 2019: This stone row is featured on the Stone Rows of Great Britain website - see their entry for Buttern Hill, which includes a description, photographs of the alignment and the individual stones, plans of the row from a recent survey in May 2017, access information, links to other online resources for more information.

The SRoGB also includes a section for 'A Landscape Reveal' which discusses and illustrates visual relationships with prominent features which appear, then disappear, in the landscape as you walk along the row.

The row is also recorded as Pastscape Monument No. 434362 and as MDV3537 (Buttern Hill (Neolithic Stone Alignment) on the Cornwall and Scilly HER.

Buttern Hill row
Buttern Hill row submitted by SandyG : View from the south east. The stones along this length seem to protrude from a slight bank. This could be seen to indicate that this site is the remains of an historic field boundary. Other lengths of the row however are not associated with this bank which may represent a path that has developed on the upside of the stones. The absence of any other boundaries in the area very strongly suggest that...

Summary : A 21-stone row which lies to the west of Leskernick Hill and is oriented ENE-WSW; the propped stone on Leskernick Hill comes into view suddenly from the south terminal stone. The Cornwall HER Map gives this summary (above) at this location but the Leskernick Hill name at least is inaccurate?

Presumably that should be "lies to the west of Buttern Hill", but its possible that the "propped stone on Leskernick Hill comes into view suddenly from the south terminal stone" part is correct.
