Ancient Settlement in Finnmark
The stone age settlement at Hjemmeluft consists of two rectangular foundation marks. They are located in the field just next to the Alta museum. The ground is only covered in short moss and the markings are easily visible. They are not so clar however, as settlement marks from later periods. The rectangular shapes are marked with white tree poles in all four corners.
The marks are just around 100 metres from the closest rock art panel belonging to the huge rock art sites at Alta. Perhaps the people living in this settlement was among those who made the rock art? The marks are around 6 metres in length and around 4 metres wide. They are around 0,3 metres deep. They have been dated to around 4000BC in the late stone age period.
