Despite the resolution to preserve the earthworks, many were damaged by erosion after vegetation was removed and others were destroyed by development. In the 1830's many were restored according to plans made fifty years earlier, but there is some speculation that the work may have altered the shapes of some of the mounds to mimic impressive sites found further west.
The earthworks are attributed to the same cultures, identified as Hopewell and Adena, responsible for other geometric enclosures in found in the Ohio valley.
The location given is general, but lies at the Muskingum riverbank at the foot of the 'Sacra Via' graded way. Sources include: Indian Mounds of the Middle Ohio Valley, Woodward and McDonald, 2002.
