Marietta Earthworks - Capitolium
Marietta Earthworks - Capitolium submitted by AKFisher : The Capitolium Mound in Marietta, Ohio, part of the Marietta earthworks built prior to AD 900. The city built its library on top of the mound. Part of the Marietta Earthworks Complex. This was the second largest of two truncated pyramid earthworks in the complex. The original survey shows earthen ramps on all four sides.

Today the Washington County Library is sited directly on the top of this earthen pyramid.

Originally a linear embankment with openings surrounded the Capitolium, the Quadranaou, and two other flat-topped pyramids. Unfortunately, nothing visible remains of the associated enclosure today.

The earthworks were made around 200 BC. (Vote or comment on this photo)
