Apparently part of Wearyall Hill is under threat from a local councillor who wants to cut into the hillside in order to build some executive houses.

This is the notice in full:



"Planning permission has been applied for by 24 Roman Way, Glastonbury, to build executive houses and garages in/on the land that is currently termed as the garden of that property. Building these houses will mean cutting into the hillside and then building a retaining wall to support the hill.

The application may be viewed in Glastonbury library and any concerns may be forwarded to Mendip District Council by 11/05/05. The decision to allow/disallow planning permission will be made on 6th June."

Detailed plans show close proximity of the proposed houses to the Holy Thorn.

Note: Developers given go-ahead, objections failed - see comment...

I used to live on Hill Head and was told by the locals that it was called Wearyall Hill. It was a lovely spot with beautifull views right across to Weston-super-Mare. I had a very doggy cat and used to take him for walks over Wearyall Hill. I also used to take him camping at Lulworth/Dirdle Door in Dorset. He used to create quite a stir on the campsite particularly with the dogs!!!

I had no idea that you folks were struggling with this. I am sorry that some random capitalist will deface this ancient and holy site for his own, mortal enrichment. I cannot believe that this is going to happen! England is getting more like America every day. (Sorry.) I have made two pilgrimages to Glastonbury and can't imagine what they have planned for Wearyall Hill. This breaks my heart. For pity's sake, God walked there! Keep fighting!

The latest update, posted by Mr Will Parfitt, on the Glastonbury Noticeboard:-


"... the council made a final decision and have approved outline permission for 5 houses ... they have set conditions which should ensure the work is carried out sensitively and good landscaping features are included, so it is not as bad as it could be from that perspective. (Mr James could appeal against the conditions, I don't know but I don't think he will because, despite what some people have suggested, I think he does care about the hill and how it looks in the end.)

All the objector's concerns have not been addressed, as might be expected, and they certainly taken no consideration of people's worries concerning the sacredness of the hill and the tree, but then they say that is not in their remit anyway. I had an official complaint lodged but, even though that was still in process, they went ahead and gave permission anyway, so I have withdrawn the complaint as it seemed of little use to continue. I tried to get other people to lodge complaints etc., which could have made a difference, but generally although many people have opinions about it to express, when it comes to actually doing anything they don't follow their words with actions. I guess that's the way it is.

I understand someone else is still considering asking for a judicial review but I think they are rather cheesed off with the lack of support as well, so I doubt that will happen now.

Perhaps this incident will awaken people to action when further plans are submitted which encroach upon other sacred sites in Glastonbury, as will inevitably happen in the current climate."

July 2005 ... There is still time to send objections to the local Council who give approval to such plans at
Mendip District Council, Cannards Grave Road, Shepton Mallet, Somerset BA4 5BT

the holy site is most definitely under thrreat as the excavation work etc that will be needed to build the houses on the steep slope beneath the tree may well destabilise the land .. also although you cannot see the area for the proposed houses from the tree you only have to walk a few paces away from ti before you are standing on land that will be removed for the housing. Don't let people fool you into thinking the threat isn't there, it most certainly is ... and not only to the holy Thorn tree, but the sacredness of the hill itself ... not to mention many other beautiful, mature trees that will die, badgers, wild birds etc disturbed.

The Order of Bards Ovates and Druids will perform their MidSummer Ceremony IN THE FIELD AT THE BOTTOM OF THE TOR at 4.15pm on Saturday 11th June.

Please meet up at bottom of Wellhouse Lane/Tor at 4.00.

The ceremony will include focus on the issue of the proposed housing development on James' land below the sacred Thorn Tree on Wearyall Hill.

Everyone who is against this development is invited to attend. Please come and show your support.

I know that area and cannot see any threat to the Holy thorn, in fact you have to go uphill to look down onto the properties, on that side of it.

This planning permission would not take away any land from Wearyall Hill that is not already fenced off and private, and should not affect our enjoyment of walking on the hill in anyway whatsover, I feel that the term threat using scare tactics to get a reaction.

I belive that the live in a tolerant and sharing society, and hope that Glastonbury remains that way.

I've been to see the plans and taken some photgraphs of them, which I've uploaded to the site. The buildings will be very close to the thorn tree and will have a significant impact from what I've seen.

      'Mendip Planning Board will meet on Wednesday 25 May 6.00pm to discuss this planning application.

      Three minutes are allocated for a representation from those opposing the development.

      The main objection must be:
      The area is increasingly reliant on the income from tourists and
      those on pilgrimage.
      The Holy Thorn is one of the prime attractions.
      The boundary of this development is approximately 50 yards from the Thorn.

      What a crass and stupid shooting of itself in the foot if it is given
      permission.
      It sets a nasty precedent.
      It is not a brown field or in-fill site, but a small orchard.'

I intend to campaign as well as I can to ensure this does not happen, but it is depressing. You can almost see it, the 4W4's arriving for the weekend from Surbiton and them campaigning to get the freaks and tree huggers off the hill because we spoil THEIR weekend view. Personally the sooner these crazies are removed from the gene pool the happier I'll be. (note for Mr Blair: no I am not a terrorist, I am trying to protect the countryside that you and yours are hell bent on destroying.) (Ok?)
