Ancient woodland is endangered in our country. Earthworks are part of our heritage. Despite an order by "RESCUE", trees are being felled in this ancient woodland. See photos below. The excuse is that it is to make clearance for young trees to grow. The truth is that Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council want a road through to Scholes and Thorpe Hesley.

They first applied for it more than twenty years ago. Ancient woodland has been there for thousands of years and needs no felling to continue, but it does need drainage which Rotherham council have plugged up with gravel.

The location of Scholes Coppice is on the outskirts of Rotherham in South Yorkshire UK. The main reason for concern is that the wood contains a Neolithic double-ditch henge, supposedly under the protection of English Heritage, called "Caeser's Camp" which is in real danger from the people around it, including the local council. Also the woodlands are Ancient woodlands; therefore need no help from people except to protect them from interference and damage from outside. Clearing mature trees raises the ground water, filling in drainage culverts and felling mature trees does not encourage smaller trees to grow but drowns them. Water running off the field now runs in streams directly onto the woods and the 10,000 yr old earthwork, in effect it is being washed away

To whom it may concern:

Are the councilmen in Rotherham expeirenced
tree growers? If not maybe they should
seek advice from other tree farmers in
England. There are two ways that Alabama
Tree Farmers keep the floor of the tree farms
clear (1) Hire loggers to come in and properly
thin the trees . This gets rid of unwanted under-
brush and vines that could choke off life to the
tree crop. (2) With some types of trees, etc.
Long leaf Pine, tree farmers can consult with
our Forestery personnel and they can do a
burn-off when the weather conditions, and
proper hunidity permit. The burn- off permits
new undergrowth and gets rid of excess
dead trees and other unwanted follage.
The tree industry is a miltibillion dollar business
in Alabama, USA.
We people of the world need to take care of
our trees. We care for our trees and they will
take care of us in more than one way. They are
part of Gods creation.

Sincerely yours,
Mrs. Carolyn W. McGill
