The Pocket Guide to Megaliths is our own unique guide to ancient and prehistoric sites worldwide, for iPhone and iPad which has been in development and testing for many months. We are now ready to announce it to the world so please pass on this exciting news.

The app accesses the ever growing database of around 50,000 sites and entries worldwide, submitted by contributors to the Megalithic Portal web resource. Central to the app is the highly detailed map interface, which has been custom written for speed, and with sophisticated pin clustering to deal with the massive amount of data pages we have.

Each of the page entries are categorised and allow filtering using a range of criteria by site type, country, ease of access, (subjective) condition etc.

It has a built in database to allow navigation to sites without a data connection, although most functionality requires a mobile internet connection. It provides extra features such as live weather, sunset and moon phase information for all locations.

The News View
• Provides a short list of the latest entries and news items, updated regularly.
• News items may be selected to discover further detailed information provided by the Megalithic Portal.

Main View
• Global filter, allows views to be restricted to specific selections based on criteria.

Useful utilities are included to help when you are out exploring such as

The app (Pocket Guide: Megaliths) has been developed by Senet Mobile UK and accesses data from the Megalithic Portal. Proceeds are split between supporting continuing development of the app and the Megalithic Portal web resource. A very similar app for Android is currently in development so more news on that soon.

Members of the Megalithic Portal Society are entitiled to a free copy, with no limit on updates as part of our membership package.

Might just be worth stating what the actual app name is as it took me a few searches to find it i.e. 'Pocket Guide Megaliths' (Julie from Australia)

Thanks for the feedback Julie, I've made that clearer. I've also added a QR code / barcode thing on the page above to link to the app. I hope you enjoy the app.

Looking good Andy! Now purchased and installed on my aging iPad.

Am I right in assuming that notes cold be saved on site without a data connection, and if so, would there be any way of extracting those notes to add to the Portal later? Is there any way to capture photos for inclusion on the Portal via the app? I see there's no login facility - are these things that could be considered for a later version?

Yes the notes are saved locally on the device, we were careful to make sure they don't get overwritten when you update the site data or app so they should be a good thing to use.

We are definitely looking at how to get them added to the Portal as a future enhancement, along with photos as well. Login is one of the technical issues.

Thanks very much for the re-tweet as how much further development we are able to do on the app really does depend on the interest we can get in it, Martin the developer has been very generous to us.

Busy with some personal/family issues at present, but will eventually do a write up on the Journal for you, which hopefully result in a few sales.
