Stonehenge.
Stonehenge. submitted by Startrack : Stonehenge Winter Solstice sunrise (Vote or comment on this photo)
by Christopher Chippindale, Thames & Hudson, 2004, 312pp, 285 illustrations. Price £12.95. ISBN 0-500-28467-9

When "Stonehenge Complete" was first published in 1983, it won the British Archaeological Book Award. It has now been revised and updated in a new, expanded edition to include the latest theories and discoveries, bringing the Stonehenge story into the 21st century.

Chippindale, who is Reader in Archaeology and curator for British collections at the Cambridge University Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, really does provide the ‘complete’ account of the history of Stonehenge. The book is highly readable, humorous and covers every aspect of Britain’s most famous ancient site from the theories of Inigo Jones' to the latest ‘alternative visions’, bringing in the views of astronomers, mystics, tourists, artists, poets and, of course, archaeologists.

It begins by discussing the phenomenal worldwide interest in Stonehenge, particularly with reference to the 360,000 web pages on which it is mentioned and the 25,000 people who visit at the summer solstice each year. The main changes and additions to this third edition are in the later chapters where Chippindale introduces the latest archaeological research which has led to the revision of many theories, including radiocarbon dates now showing Stonehenge was 500 years older than was previously thought.

Stonehenge Complete is fully illustrated throughout with over 285 illustrations, 13 of which are in colour, and is divided into 17 easily digestible chapters. At only £12.95 it is a must for any bookshelf. Order one from amazon.co.uk with this link and help with our running costs.

Thanks for the review Vicky. I agree it's an excellent book. I was particulartly interested in the most up to date section, where he includes details of the forthcoming Visitor Centre and the (lack of) progress in this area. I spotted one glaring error - Chippendale writes quite fondly of the alternative magazine Stonehenge Viewpoint, giving the impression it is still running. It ceased publication in the late 1980s and its main protagonist Donald Cyr (he of the ice halos around the sun and moon) sadly died in 1999.
