Rugby is a sport that originated in England in the 19th century and was later adopted by other parts of the world. The game, when it comes to Australia, is very closely associated with the eastern coastal region NSW & QLD in particular . There’s a few different rugby competitions Aussies enjoy throughout the year. The Australian National Rugby League is one of the most popular ones in terms of viewership & fans. This article will cover rugby's history in Australia and a few other facts to be aware of.

As mentioned, the history of rugby league as a separate form of rugby football goes back to 1895 in Huddersfield in Northern England. In Australia it has became the most watched sport on television

A Short History of Rugby in Australia

Let’s have a look at some significant historical events:

● The Southern Rugby Football Union was formed in 1874 in Sydney. At that time not many people were aware of the sport, and there were only five clubs that played the sport.

● In the 1880s, the sport became highly popular in the east coast cities of Sydney and Brisbane. The competitions between New South Wales and the New Zealand teams began to increase.

● In 1897 the metropolitan Rugby union was formed in Sydney to administer the league competitions. They also worked on increasing the audience's interests in the game. This union was later known as the New South Wales Rugby Union.

● The number of fans rose over the years, and by the 1900s, there were 79 clubs. Competitions held at various levels including, the senior and junior.

● Slowly the sport started to gain attention in other parts of Australia, and a national league known as the Australian Rugby Union was formed in 1949. The game's popularity and acceptance among the Aussies made it a predominant sport among the Australian rules football.

Understanding Rugby League

The rugby league is a 40-minute sport that involves full contact. There will be 13 players on each team, and the aim is to get the ball across the opposition's goal line. While one team attacks the other team should defend their goal lines.

Rugby League is a popular, exciting and highly sophisticated sport in Australia wth a significant number of fans across the country.

Due to its popularity there are plenty of activities Australians do around the league. NRL tipping competitions are extremely common among Australian families and groups of friends.

Here are some other interesting facts about the rugby league:

There Are Several Ways To Score A Goal

There are a couple of ways to score a goal during the game.

● They include the Try, where the ball is placed downwards over the goal line. A team is given four points for this.

● The second method is the penalty kick, where the team gets the opportunity to kick the ball over a crossbar and win two points. The drop goal or the field goal is a one-pointer kick where the player gets a goal by clearing the crossbar from anywhere.

The Australian Style

Dally Messenger was one of Australia's most representative players, he was in part responsible for the popularisation of the NRL in Australia back in the 1900’s. His name & legacy have been preserved with the NRLs Dally M award, presented to outstanding players.
