Middleton Moor (84) submitted by rich32 : Middleton Moor, North Yorkshire - SE1229352146 A medium sized rectangular rock set on Middle Gill Bents with in Middleton Moor Enclosure. This rock is 195m E of cup referenced 501 by Boughey & Vickerman, 83m E of Middle Gill & 10m W of the Roman Road. Over the past few months Rich32 and I, have been surveying the Middleton Moor area in North Yorkshire, which is moorland just north of Ilkley. Between us we have uncovered more than a dozen previously unrecorded cup-and-ring marked stones(CRs).

The region was extensively surveyed by Stuart Feather in the 1960s, who 1st recorded many of the CRs, but with these recent finds it looks as though areas of the moorland may not have been covered. The 2003 West Yorkshire Archaeology Service publication ‘Prehistoric Rock-art of the West Riding’ states “After Middleton Moor, there is a 4km break in the region of Denton Moor, where only one carved rock is known in situ (cup506)”. However, four more CRs have been found within 200 meters of cup506, so it begs the question, how much more is still waiting to be uncovered in this area.

Most of the CRs are quite simple in design, comprising little more than stones with single to multiple cup-markings, only two of the new CRs include grooves. The majority of them are located in the region between Dryas Dike, northwards to the flat plain of Beamsley Level on Beamsley Moor, more than 1100 feet (367m) above sea level. Not only have CRs been found, but also possible standing stones & Neolithic walling.

Over the last decade the amount of archaeological remains in the region between Middleton and Langbar Moors on the west, to Askwith and Snowden Moors to the east has doubled. It could be that these moorlands to the north of Ilkley were of equal, if not of greater importance to our Neolithic ancestors than Ilkley Moor itself.

Excellent work, perhaps we could organise a field trip and volunteers to come and do a wide sweeping survey. The beer is excellent up there too, so we would be well rewarded at the end of each day. Cheers AS.
