The Sunday Times set a quiz on the 23 December, one of the answers to which relates to standing stones - can anyone help?

"Day nine brought forth 18 "ladies" in one western county, the remains of two different sets of identically named standing stones".

Having thoroughly researched this question, I am no closer to being able to reach a solution! Searches repeatedly take me to the Nine Ladies in Derbyshire, but that doesn't fit the bill. Any help greatly appreciated!

    Nine Maidens Stone Row and Nine Maidens Stone Circle, one nr St Colomb Major the other in West Penwith.

We've also tried merry maidens in cornwall, but have drawn a blank there, as there are 19 stones. Have you any other suggestions - we'll swap you your answer for some others in the quiz.

    The local expert Andy Norfolk agreed with me on the "Stones List". He seems to think the compiler only knows of 2 of these sites & got the clue around his/her neck!

The name "Nine Maidens" is found at Tregeseal, Boskednan, Boscawen Un, Wendron & the stone row on St Breock Down, all in Cornwall, a western county if ever there was one!

    My initial inclination was to think of the South West, the clue does only say a western county - it could be anywhere in Britain - Cumbria? Wales? Scotland?
