Jeff Belanger writes: I had only vaguely heard about ley lines until recently. My rather naïve understanding of them was that they were veins of energy, mystical streams, but a study of leys taught me that this is pretty off base the current theories of what ley lines are.

In researching the phenomenon, some truly intriguing mysteries can be found. There are fairy paths, corpse roads, geister wegen, and a slew of other supernatural linear features on our planet where people do come for spiritual experiences, and there are "roads" that ghosts have been reported traveling down repeatedly.

The term and concept of "leys" was first put forth in June of 1921 by Alfred Watkins (1855-1935), a well-known Herefordshire businessman, photographer, and amateur archeologist. While examining some maps, Watkins noticed that some ancient sites - stone circles, standing stones, and prehistoric mounds - fell into an alignment. Watkins originally thought these alignments were old traders' routes and he named them "leys," an old Anglo-Saxon word for meadows or cleared strips of land. In 1925, Watkins published a book on the subject entitled The Old Straight Track.

Paul Devereux has been studying the subject of leys and the mysteries of earth energies for more than 25 years. Devereux was editor of The Ley Hunter Journal from 1976-1996 and has written many books on related subjects. His latest book is Fairy Paths & Spirit Roads. I spoke to Devereux from his home in the Cotswolds in England.

I have been researching the ley system for many years and can say conclusively that leys do exist. My home town of Crieff in Perthshire sits next to the Highland Boundary Fault and, since standing stones are placed over geological faults and dykes, there are many leys through the town.
It is little wonder that few people can understand them as they are completely different to our culture. I found that my town has been totally built around this ancient knowledge - all of the straight town roads are on leys, all of the country roads are on leys and all of the irrigation ditches have been built on leys by the monks.

I've read a little of The Old Straight Track (before I had to return it to the library - must remember to get it out again) and saw no suggestion that Watkins thought lays were mystical in any way. He seemed to be suggesting that they were just tracks people used to move around the landscape. The various ancient sites are 'linked' by the leys because they were convenient landmarks which travellers could see from a distance and by which they could navigate.

Has anyone read all of the book? Have I got the right idea? I was finding it really interesting but won't borrow it again if it's going to go all magical

Believe it or not, it usually takes another month before British magazines show up in stores over here. I'll be looking for it, though. My favourite magazine, I never miss it! And I can't get enough of Devereux. Would love to meet him someday.

If this up your street, even if only from a phenomenological angle, Fortean Times April 2007 carries a substantial article on these things. It appears to a be a condensation of his new book, Spirit Roads.

The real crosses with the unreal; nothing does not exist.
One could say that existence itself is a figment of the imagination.
Beyond the seeable is the unseeable, as dogs cannot see colour, so there are things we cannot sense also.

I find that anything that cannot be seen,or felt, must be a figment of one's imagination, and cannot be logical, it's a continuation of religeous brainwashing we all had as children. arthur,burbage,leicestershire.
