Is Stonehenge lost in the long grass? Fiona Reynolds, the Director General of the National Trust, today appealed to Transport Secretary Alastair Darling, to cut through the confusion and delay surrounding the Stonehenge Road proposals and clarify how the decisions will now be made.

"We have never been closer to finding a world class solution for Stonehenge" says Ms Reynolds, "but at this critical juncture there are worrying signs that the Government is not giving the project the priority that its national and international status merits."

In an open letter written to Mr Darling, Fiona Reynolds points out that it is now nine months since the end of the Public Inquiry into the Stonehenge road scheme proposals and the Inquiry inspector’s report has still not been published.

"Early indications were that it would be delivered, in September, but it appears we are still waiting" she said.

The delay in the scheme co-incides with the recent Department for Transport decision that transport aspects of the roads scheme will now be shaped by regional priorities.

"Regional authorities will inevitably base their decisions on regional transport need and the constraints of the regional transport budget" Fiona Reynolds continues.

"There is now a real risk that final decisions will not properly address the international heritage and cultural importance of Stonehenge."

Fiona Reynolds concluded,

"It is to the Government’s credit that we have come further towards achieving the goals for Stonehenge than ever before. This makes it all the more important that Government sees things through and ensures that Stonehenge does not become obscured in bureaucratic long grass".
