Burneside Earthwork
Burneside Earthwork submitted by John Hanson : A raised cigar shaped 'earthwork' at Burneside Cumbria, close to the village. (Vote or comment on this photo)
I'm trying to identify this raised cigar shaped 'earthwork' at Burneside Cumbria. It is close to the village, next to the river. Any ideas? I can't find it on any OS maps.

Hi, the Mound in the pic is called "the ant hill", as far as i know (i could be wrong) it was built about 150 yrs ago, and is a river defence.

In the photo, just to the left, there is a flood plain, every winter and spring it floods.

I think it was put there when croppers (the paper mill) altered the coarse of the river kent.

I live 100 ft from it, and i used to play on there when i was a kid, as a teenager i went over it with a metal detector and found a few coins with 1868 on them, so i would say they were from the workmen that built it.
