Gambling has always been a popular activity, but it wasn’t always legal. See how the gambling laws changed and evolved in the UK and Canada over the years. Here we will look at how gambling laws have changed and evolved in different countries, from the UK to Canada.Gambling is one of the most profitable industries in the world, and it has existed since the beginning of humankind. Although it’s one of the oldest activities, there’s still some stigma around it, and it’s not yet legal in every country in the world.
While it’s highly profitable, gambling can also cause gambling addiction, and that’s why many countries don’t legalize it. On the other hand, governments worldwide are constantly looking for a way to legalize gambling and adequately regulate it.
Fans of casino games have faced many restrictions and bans in the past, but those restrictions are starting to lift throughout history. Official gambling acts have been released, thus enabling casino fans to enjoy playing their favorite game legally, not only in land-based casinos but also in online casinos.
The Evolution of Gambling Laws in the UK
Sixty years ago, the British Parliament passed the Betting and Gaming Act. This act legalized gambling for small prizes. On January 1st, 1961, the betting shops in the UK opened their doors, giving British people a place to play. During this period, gambling on the streets was illegal. With the appearance of online casinos in the late 1990s, the British Parliament was obliged to reconsider the outdated laws. This caused the formation of the 2005 Gambling Act, whose mission was to license, regulate and oversee all gambling activities. The 2005 Act had control over both land-based and online casinos. All the rules found in the 2005 Act had to be consistent and not depend on where you choose to gamble.
To prevent people from spending more money than they can afford, the government brought a law in 2020 to ban the use of credit cards as a payment method. There are various legal payment methods, such as bank transfers, e-wallets, and debit cards, and there are countless online casinos that accept PayPal. Fast forward to 2022, there are some rules you need to follow if you want to gamble in the UK. It would help if you were at least 18 years old to play in land-based or online casinos. The law demands that you show an ID to verify your age if you want to play in a land-based casino. Most online casinos also demand players to upload a copy of their ID to create an online casino account.
The Evolution of Gambling Laws in Canada
After Canada was formed, the Canadian Criminal Code Law was created in 1892. This law banned all types of gambling forms. Gambling was considered an inappropriate activity, and political leaders were firm in their decision to keep the morality of the Canadian citizens.Although gambling was illegal, that didn’t stop people from gambling. Total prohibition of gambling just pushed people to gamble underground. Just eight years after creating the strict law, the government began allowing certain gambling games, like bingo and raffles, but only for non-profit organizations.
Ten years later, in 1910, the gambling law was adjusted to permit horse racing gambling. By the 1920s, Canada allowed other operators to host raffles, not just charities, under the condition of applying for a license. Everyone interested in providing games must obtain a license from the government to keep the gambling fair and legal.
At the beginning of the 20th century, Canada became more liberal. The government legalized the lottery because this game was a potential source of enormous tax income.
By the mid-1980s, most gambling restrictions were lifted, and Canada legalized almost every type of gambling. Since then, land-based and online casinos have been on the rise.
To this day on, gambling is a lawful and regulated activity in Canada, and a provincial government manages it. All provincial governments are overseen by the Canadian Gaming Commission to ensure fair play.
Since each province in Canada has its laws regulating gambling in their area, some provinces allow players to start playing at 18. Other provinces allow players to gamble if they’re 19 years old. Land-based casinos are obliged to ask players for an ID to confirm their age and identity and make sure they’re at a legal age to gamble.
Conclusion
Although gambling has existed since the beginning of humankind, it wasn’t always easy to gamble. All those restrictions caused people to look for alternative ways to enjoy entertainment. Luckily, times have changed for the better, especially for the gambling industry. Gambling has become more accessible for people in the UK and Canada. A player can now enjoy their favorite entertainment without fearing breaking the law. Please gamble responsibly.
