The Portway
The Portway submitted by andyt : Damage to the roman track The Portway at Milford near Belper, Derbyshire (Vote or comment on this photo)
The Portway is a Roman track linking the settlement and fort of Little Chester in Derby with Buxton. Some local historians believe that this track pre-dates the roman occupation and was simply adopted by them for convenience.

The Belper News has run two articles in the last few weeks detailing local residents concerns about the damage being done to this ancient route by off-roaders. The two attached photos, sourced from the Belper News, show the deep indentations made by 4x4 vehicles to the pathway.

The Portway follows a beautiful route over local landmark The Chevin between Belper and Milford and is well-used by walkers.

most of the damage is coursed by the weather, always has been , i remember when the green laners were active they used to repair the lanes to keep them open. now the walkers and the do gooders have got rid of them they should repair them and stop moaning.

No evidence has been found to identify this as a Roman road, in fact there seems no need to climb up and then down when there is a perfectly straight forward route to replace it.
It is most probable that this was a road to the Quarry at the top of the hill. Excavation across the road did not provide any evidence of it being Roman. Also where did this road go to and from? If roman it must have continuations on either side and certainly to the south it is far too steep.

The damage that off roaders and motorcycles do to the Chevin is horrendous. Not only do they damage the environment but they also pose a hazard to walkers. Recently, my partner and I were walking our dogs there one Sunday afternoon. During this time, we were subjected to a mad woman on a horse who decided it was perfectly to safe to gallop even though there were walkers out on en masse. After this, we encountered a group of motorcycles who came at us at speed, churning up the ground who clearly had no regard for anyone else. The terrain was obviously badly damaged by off-roaders and it was necessary to watch where walking in order to avoid injury.

If we wish to preserve this ancient site, surely restrictions should be imposed as to its use?

    'A mad woman on a horse'? - Whilst you were 'walking (your) dogs'? In my experience, as a horse owner and rider of more than 40 years, you pose more of a hazard than I do.
    I very nearly lost my life thanks to an ignorant pair of walkers who let their Daschund puppies loose on a country lane normally enjoyed by all. Their dogs were out of control and my horse, having a 'flight' not 'fight' instinct, bolted when under attack by these nasty dogs, but not before spinning and kicking one of them in self defense plus their owner.

    I was air lifted to hospital with life threatening injuries from which I, eventually, recovered. The dog had to be put down apparently. Quid Pro Quo.

and the ammount of damage you ramblers do doesnt count does it, witness the bronte falls and the damage your feet have done there.

    If you've walked there, you've done as much damage as any individual rambler. If an area is popular, its popular. You can't keep it to yourself (much though I'd like to keep some areas to myself, this is simply not possible and not fair).

I have read the artilce, and all I can say is, let everyone drive their cars over the grave sites of the four wheel drive family members, and see what they think then.
Some people have NO RESPECT.

    pure vandalism, as in walkers leaving litter / erosion due to the clod hopping boots they wear, as theve done at the nine ladies.

      Leaving litter in beautiful places and countryside is awful of course. But I'm a walker and yes I have walking boots; the effect on the ground isn't caused by walking boots, its caused by the number of people walking in popular areas. If you walk there yourself you're causing just as much damage as any other hiking individual.
