Bull Ring Henge Open Day 2011 - June and Plan submitted by TimPrevett : June's fascinating talk of her research about and at Dove Holes henge. (Vote or comment on this photo)
The Megalithic Portal held its second live event on Saturday 30th July at the Bull Ring Henge in Dove Holes, Derbyshire. Many thanks to the hundreds of visitors who turned up from far and wide.
The open day was an appreciation of the huge Bull Ring henge and a celebration of the Megalithic Portal's 10th Birthday. We held talks and displays in the community hall from 1pm to 5.30pm approx, with amazing home cooked hot and cold food available from lunchtime onwards.
Guy Stephenson created an amazing display of Neolithic Stone Axes, and Tim Prevett gave tours of the henge which is right next door. The speakers gave talks about the henge, and its wider context as well. Our first speaker was Martha Lawrence from Buxton Museum, who researched and presented a talk especially for the day.
After a crash course in video editing from yours truly and after some audio hiccups, I'm pleased to say that most of the talks are ready to view. They are loaded at the bottom of this page, complete with slides.
Thanks to everyone who helped on the day, too many to mention, and for all the comments and suggestions which have been overwhelmingly positive. We had a great time and are already thinking about the next event.
Below are all the photos we have had in so far. If you took any photos of the day please send them via the Bull Ring page
(look to the top right and click on submit an image) or email them to [email protected]
Read more about our the day at the Bullring on the page that announced the event and see our main Bull Ring henge page for photos of the henge on the day, including some great kite shots from Hamish Fenton and panoramas from TheCaptain.
Apologies that I didn't have much time to chat to people on the day, was concentrating on making sure everything ran smoothly and particularly that we had a good record of the day for everyone who couldn't make it.
I hope you enjoy watching the talks from our free event over the coming weeks. We considered making these talks 'members only' but have decided to upload the for the benefit of everyone. Please in return consider joining up as a member of our society to support our work, it is just £10 for the year.
Note:Two more videos of talks from our open day are now ready. Firstly, June who stepped in at the last moment to talk about her research into the Bull Ring

Kevin Kilburn speaking at the Bull Ring Open Day by Andy B on Tuesday, 20 March 2012 (User Info | Send a Message)
Kevin Kilburn, amateur astronomer and Fellow of the Royal Astonomical Society (Portal ID 'astronomer') speaking at the Bull Ring Open Day in July 2011. Kevin's talk includes fascinating details of the Leek double sunset, thoughts on astronomical alignments at other sites in the North Midlands and similarities to monuments in Dumfries and Galloway such as at Cairnholy.
He also explains oft misunderstood astronomical concepts such as the precession of the equinoxes and changes in the obliquity of the ecliptic. Finally he offers a suggestion as to why prehistoric people, before the Bronze Age would have been so interested in settling the area - the copper!
Thanks again Kevin for giving this talk and allowing us to upload it.
Ancient Routes of North Wales, illustrated talk by Tim Prevett by Andy B on Tuesday, 07 February 2012 (User Info | Send a Message)
Author and tour guide Tim Prevett (The Portal's ShropshireTraveller) gives an illustrated talk about Ancient Routes of North Wales. An excellent talk and there are lots of stones and ancient sites featured in it.
Tim was speaking at the Megalithic Portal's Bull Ring Open Day last summer. Apologies for the lip sync problems, I hope it doesn't spoil your enjoyment of an excellent talk.

Good work Andy,
Nice thought that the day lives on . . .
Kirsty Whittall - The Barrow and the Bull Ring speaking at the Bull Ring Open Day by Andy B on Wednesday, 05 October 2011 (User Info | Send a Message)
Kirsty Whittall speaking at the Megalithic Portal's Bull Ring Open Day on Saturday 30th July 2011. (Oh and by the way Kirsty - you sounded brilliant!)
A couple of technical points on the video. On Kirsty's talk I lost the sound from the camera as the mic lead came unplugged. Fortunately I had the DAT sound as well but lip synching it back up with Kirsty's video was extremely difficult so this drifts off in places. Secondly, by coincidence Virgin have installed a Tivo box today for us and I've been playing with the Youtube TV playback feature with this video, which is excellent, you are on 'real TV' Kirsty! However I also see the slides are now too big for some screens. I will see if I can rectify this.
