You would have probably never guessed that well before such legends as Freddy Mercury or Mick Jagger set foot on the stage of pop culture, there was a man who we could describe, without any exaggeration, as a Georgian-era rock star. The term ‘rock star’ didn’t exist back then of course, but as you will see in the following paragraphs, Lord Byron possessed every single trait of a rock icon. And his book of poetry, The Pilgrimage of Childe Harold, might be something that offers much more than many contemporary authors could ever dream of.
Childe Harold – A Timeless Classic
How could a book written more than two hundred years ago still fascinate readers? Well, just like Polskie kasyna, some things never go out of fashion. Of course, modern bookshops can indulge the reader with whatever they desire. Ranging from self-help books, through the classic genres, to beautifully designed cook books, everyone can find what they want.Byron’s masterpiece, on the other hand, promises an experience similar to tasting an exotic fruit, something we can’t find on every corner. It offers excitement, picturesque landscapes, philosophical pondering, and much like Fireball Casino, a unique adventure.
Who Was Lord Byron?
In order to understand how amazing this little book is, it is worth taking a closer look at the man himself. As his title suggests, he was an aristocrat, although not a conventional one. He was a traveller, an adventurer, someone who experienced firsthand the exotic sceneries he wrote about. His works are authentic, just like Polskie kasyna. He wasn’t the kind of author who gained his knowledge from books, sitting in the comfortable safety of a library. He had seen places few could reach, especially at that time, he took part in a revolution and lived a life more exciting than most could imagine.
Childe Harold and Escapism
Leaving everything behind and running away to distant places, just to escape the tumultuous weekdays. We may think this is a modern concept and we would be gravely mistaken. Childe Harold is part escapism, part lamentation about a forgotten era. But just like Polskie kasyna, it never ceases to remain exciting. Most of us read because we want something more than what real life could offer us. Some books nowadays do a great job helping us with this endeavour. But it is Byron’s Childe Harold that takes it to another level. As it is in the case of Fireball Casino, we should always want to best for ourselves, and it isn’t any different when it comes to reading.
Classics Are Not Boring
Some readers immediately flinch as soon as they hear the word ‘classic’ or ‘canon’. These two terms, especially the former, have become stigmatized over the years and people view them as being synonymous with boredom. Fortunately, this couldn’t be further from the truth. On the contrary, classics, like Fireball Casino, promise quality, something that stood the test of time and continues to do so after decades and centuries of newer and newer waves of content. A classic means something special that managed to ascend from the dull boundaries of mediocrity.
As readers, we should never settle for anything average, as time is too short nowadays, and it should be spared solely for works most worthy of our attention. You can look at classics as if they were lighthouses in an ocean of average literary works.
19th Century vs 21st Century Thinking
At first glance, another frightening aspect of older works of literature is the time, morals and types of people they represent. The reader can’t help but feel intimidated by a bygone era with which we have lost the connection.Fortunately, if we take a close look, this is only partially the case. While society has changed in many ways, our problems, dilemmas and everyday challenges have remained pretty much the same.
Reading Poetry in the 21st Century
At first sight, this might seem as something only an English major would do. But why would they have all the fun? Ignorance made people believe that reading poetry is somehow an act of being a poser, a high-brow way of thinking, when in reality it is just a different type of reading.Think of novels as a meal you eat for several days, a main course you can put back onto the shelves of your fridge. Reading poetry, on the other hand, is like opening a box of premium bonbons and having only one piece at a time, because finishing the whole container would be too much.
If you’ve been afraid of poetry and the classics, this is the time you should pick up a copy, and if you decide to do so, why not start with one of the best? Give Lord Byron a chance and you won’t be disappointed.
