Photo from June 2009. The cattle were supposed to trample down the bracken but only ate the grass within the circle, destabilising several stones that, after we reported it to the Historic Environment Service in Truro, had to be secured. So far this is the only major site to be affected, others not yet being grazed although it is planned to do this at Men-an-Tol and Lanyon Quoit.

Jeeeezus! I definitely wouldn't go near them! Hamish/[Mike Murray] will have a heart attack when he sees these! (He may be abroad right now.)

This damage is not unlike that caused by cattle at Arbor Low in Derbyshire, where cattle hooves cause serious damage to the bank in wet weather when the ground is soft. I mentioned this to the farmer but got nowhere.

Even if you don't see any longhorn cattle, the scary signs are enough to put you off - see page four of this PDF: http://www.savepenwithmoors.com/2010%20what%20is%20the%20problem.pdf

I hadn't realised how bad the situation was til I saw the photos on that pdf link above, quite shocking what's been done to the landscape.

Cattle walk all over Mayburgh Henge too at certain times of the year. The banks are gradually eroding, and I worry that the cattle are a major cause.

To be honest this sort of thing ought to be expected; indeed would be expected by most farmers. Bracken is horrible stuff; it has a huge range of natural defences, not least of which are that it tastes quite amazingly vile. Given the choice, almost nothing will eat it. To get rid of it, spraying or cutting is best (spraying AND cutting doesn't work as well as either just cutting or just spraying).
