Description
Site in Rome: The Tarpeian Rock (Rupes Tarpeia) was a cliff of the southern summit of the Capitoline Hill, behind the Forum Romanum.
According to early Roman histories by Livius, when Titus Tatius attacked Rome after the Rape of the Sabines around 750 BCE, the Vestal Virgin Tarpeia, daughter of Spurius Tarpeius, governor of the Capitoline Hill citadel, betrayed the Rome by opening the city gates for the Sabines.
Thereafter, it was used during the Roman Republic as an execution site. Murderers and traitors were flung from the cliff to their deaths. Roman Politicians were often worried that at the end of their term of office they would suffer the same fate at the hands of an angry mob.
The area was largely built with terraces and a park over in the post Roman era and only this small area of it remains at the side.
