Description
Amphitheatre in Burnum Croatia, close to Zadar. The amphitheatre in the Burnum Municipium, home for the 11th Legion, was paid for Emperor Tiberius. It was destroyed in late antiquity when Emperor Justinian and his general Belisarius attempted to take back the region from the Ostrogoths.
In Spring 2005, when this picture was taken shortly after its rediscovery, local archaeologists were excavating the site with heavy machinery. Major pieces of masonry were being kept near the centre of the arena for future light restoration.
