Description
Dark Age Gallery. Escomb church NZ189301 is one of the oldest working churches in Europe, completely intact and still used for services.

Built in the early 600's, the church was built from stone from the nearby Roman fort - abondoned 2 centuries earlier when the Romans left Britain.

The church was built in a clearing in a wood, but now is surrounded by a housing estate in the village of Escomb - just outside the town of Bishop Auckland, in county Durham.

It's sad that I couldn't even get into the locked grounds, and this photo was taken with my hands held above the wall (Paparazzi style!). And I hoped for the best.

This location was in the Anglian kingdom of Bernicia (between the forth and the Tees).

The warrior kings of the time - Edwin and Oswald, were recently converted to Chrisitanity from the old Germanic Gods of Woden and Thunor.

The sound of bats shuffling their feet on hot days? I love it! What a wonderful place.

Considering that you couldn't see what you'd lined up in the viewfinder, this is really good!

There is a noticeboard beside the gate which tells you where you can obtain the keys to both the gate and the church, you missed out on a treat.

And a great little boozer with a garden and picnic tables on la ittle hill just over the road. Pleased you've visited this lesser known historic gem, Pat. I only live 20 odd miles away, so I'll be back.
