The population of the Palace at Knossos was so great that enormous quantities of food were stored in huge jars. These were kept in magazines in the basement of the palace.

The caption of this picture is entirely incorrect. No food was stored in the Knossian magazines. The jars you see held oil almost exclusively. The pits, or 'kaselles' were also used to hold oil, as well as precious materials. Grain was held in graneries located well outside the palace complex. Also, the population of the palace was not large. The encompassing city held the bulk of the population. The palace itself was so large because it was the political, financial, and economic base of the region. The oil in these jars was for export.

Maybe and then again - how can you be so certain? Is grain not held in "granaries" rather than "graneries"?
