Description
A locked gate, barbed wire AND a herd of bullocks - something tells me the nice farmer doesn't want people to visit this stone. 07/10/09

haha yes, (funny how cows are prevalent in todays photos! it's a serious subject i know but i like the humour in the latest poll :D
will try to get down to Tregeseal in the next week or 2 (an hour & 1/2 drive away) for some new photos of the situation.

The 'cow lobby' are calling them an ill informed "cow fearing" protest group!

i grew up in the countryside, call it 'fear' or 'healthy respect' everyone should be wary of cattle. farmers & walkers are killed every year because cattle are unpredictable & very easily spooked. sadly any news search for 'killed by cattle' will give no end of hits.

Bullocks are like all gangs of young lads, a bit boisterous and they have no idea how intimidated people feel when they get too close.
Re people being killed by cattle, I understand it's mostly people with dogs walking the dogs near young calves who innocently spark it off. It's the mother cows who for some reason see the person as the threat and go into attack mode. I guess the dog just runs off...
Don't take a dog if you're anywhere near cows with calves would be one thing I'd bear in mind.

You can't take a dog down one public footpath (without carrying it - yuck!) as they illegally blocked it with a cattle grid, which they now won't remove. The protesters also object to the scary cow warning signs which are rightly putting people off going onto the moor.

shouldn't someone point out that the majority of prehistoric landscapes were created to facilitate grazing animals! You can't object to millennia of land usage because a few people are scared of cows.
Damage to monuments is one thing but moaning because the landowners are utilizing the space for the purpose for which it was originally cleared of forests is a bit daft.

One thing's for sure... the farmer didn't need to make a scarecrow. That stone looks eerily life-like at this angle, like some huge robed shepherd... [ok, 'cowboy'.. but it doesn't sound the same!]

I've just checked out the site page again, and noticed it's also called the 'Bogee Common Longstone'... (or maybe 'the Bogeeman??) Glad I visited when I did, now.

frogcottage, the photo description above relates mostly to the farmer chaining the gate & covering it with barbed wire denying people the of opportunity of visiting this wonderful stone. The bullocks alone would not put most people off entering the field albeit with caution imo.
