Me! But how to prove it. Let's think. Who was there. First use was on the Stones List I'm sure...

Andy,
I think it was you also. I remember you posting on the Stones mailing list ages ago and I'd never heard it before you said it.

I tried to look for it in the List archive, but all of the older messages are undated. We need an internet archaeologist.

It's a classic Alligator Descartes-ism, I think. Probably from a private mailing list containing some of the early stones list regulars discussing some of the anoraky theories of one-time list regular, Chris Lees. Before the aliens took him away.

I have that particular discussion list archived on CD-ROM somewhere. But much more intriguing/worrying is why you would *want* proof

Martin,
Nope, it was definitely thought up by me. My corroberation is that I got the idea from being an offshore radio anorak, and seeing the obsessive similarities in the two subcultures!

It's been a while, but I'd like to provide evidence that I did coin the term 'megarak' and not Alligator Descartes. It's first use was by myself on the Stones Mailing list here: 5th October 1997
http://henge.demon.co.uk/archives/1997-10/msg00009.html

Unless Alligator can provide any evidence of it's use earlier than this then that's it deciced.

There's also something of a quite historic exchange between myself and Alligator here:

AB: Do you fancy helping with a mad ambitious endeavor to get images of every single megalith on the Internet? Again have a look at the Prehistoric Web Index.

AD: Well, this is part of where the whole Web idea comes in, one would imagine. I'm perfectly happy to continue putting up images of the Scottish sites since they're pretty reachable, and I'm sure I'd be ably aided and abetted by Martin McCarthy on this one. I'm pretty sure between us we can cover quite a good proportion of the sites.

With thanks to Chris Tweed for such a good list archive

Cheers,
Andy

This is also when we first heard from the enigmatic Chris Lees, who was doing a lot of interesting research he wouldn't tell us much about. He disappeared a year or so later, never to resurface. Are you sitill out there Chris?

Why?

To get it into a dictionary, of course.

It would be good to get it into the OED. It's been in 'proper' print a number of times, in 3rd Stone and Fortean Times thanks to the efforts of Neil Mortimer.
