Description
February 2012 - 10th century inscribed stone.
The caption reads:
"The rune stone from Gimsoy in Lofoten is one of three known rune stones in North Norway. At the site where it was found there is still a 154 cm menhir-like stone without any inscription. There have also been several smaller stones and barrows there. Most probably the rune stone was erected on a barrow, but when it was found it had been lying overturned by the road side for years. The inscription, probably from the 10th century, is not readily interpreted, but probably runs as follows:
“UKI ASES BROTHER ERECTED THIS BARROW OVER NAEVIS WHEN ASE FLED FROM HERE AND LIKEWISE THESE WELL VISIBLE STONES.”
