Castilly Henge NE to Rough Tor (L) and Brown Willy (R) in distance.

Can't help wondering if the henge was sited here because of the view in this photo. The two peaks of Rough Tor and Brown Willy might have been the 'Earth Mother' symbol that captured the rising sun on Summer Solstice between them?Maybe, as it rose, the sun also closely followed the rising left slope of Brown Willy?

I dont think the sun would rise anywhere near as far to the north as this view. It can only be about 030° from North.

Sorry Martyn, I was going by what Mike said about its orientation. Would anything else rise at 30 degs from North to be observed from this henge?

I don't have a great deal of knowledge on henges but I did read on the historic-cornwall.org.uk site "Although some henge entrances are aligned towards solar events, those in Cornwall appear to take account of topographical features rather than astronomical movements." Looking at OS maps I did notice that the river Camel from North & river Fowey from South almost cut Cornwall in half not so far from this area.

Mmmm, that's interesting given that Stonehenge is so close to the River Avon, and 'Bluestonehenge' has recently been discovered on its banks. Avebury is near the Kennet, too.
