Description
Lubaantun is nestled in these densely forested foothills of Maya Mountains. These broadleaf forests would have greeted the founders of Lubaantun, but there would have likely been significant deforestation by the end of the Mayan Classic Period (e.g. end of ninth century AD), due to the population exceeding its carrying capacity, when the area population reached about 20,000. After the disappearance of the Mayas in prior numbers, the forest is once again lush.
