Description
April 2004. The listed churchyard cross is visible in the background of this photograph (on the left, near the lych gate). The main subject of this photo is a resin replica of the figurehead from the ship Caledonia (of Arbroath) which was wrecked off the coast near Morwenstow in 1842. Only one of the crew survived the shipwreck. The bodies of most of the deceased were recovered and the vicar Rev Hawker broke with tradition and gave many of the men a burial in the parish churchyard, on the spot marked by this memorial. The original wooden figurehead (restored after spending many years in the churchyard) is now mounted inside the church, on the north wall opposite the main entrance door.
