Unexcavated Tell, or mound from numerous layers of habitations. Only a fraction of Tells in Syria are excavated. The Syrian Governments puts a marker on them and attempts to keep looters away. Most major archeological sites in the region started like this.
In Turkey they are called Tepe or Hoyuk.
