Description
Described as being "Unique in Anglo-Saxon England, this fragment is displayed right at the top of the cabinet and lit by bright spot lights, I tried a number of times to eliminate flare, but failed. Reconstructed from its four separate pieces, the Corpus records this classical Ionic capital as being in the Dept. of Archaeology at the University of Durham, although the museum has given it an accession number of TWCMS: 2001.327. It is dated from the late seventh century to the early eighth century, and is carved with a relief spiral which comes to a V-shaped point in the centre.
