Description
This corner of a cross arm or base is dated to possibly the eighth century and is recorded as AS Corpus's Monkwearmouth 02. It was also found during excavations at the Priory in 1966. The Museum information sign differs in its description from the Corpus, saying: "(this is a) corner fragment of carved sandstone
This fragment may have formed part of the ridged roof of a small shrine. Accession no: TWCMS: G17231", although the Corpus adds: "The splayed angle makes it more likely that this was a cross-arm rather than a base".
