Description
This fragment of cross arm, displayed behind glass, dates to the early eighth century. It is recorded as AS Corpus's Monkwearmouth 01. It was found during archaeological excavations at the Priory in 1966. The Corpus describes this as: "The carved face is edged by a flat-band moulding; partly encroaching on this is a deeply moulded rosette-type flower. The centre is chipped away, but curling from it is one long petal which is tucked into the corner of the arm".
