Description
pfalzfeld column
flickr image by Holly Hayes
january 24th, 2008.
The Pfalzfeld Column (Pfalzfelder Säule) dates from the 5th or 4th century BC and was found in a cemetery in Pfalzfeld. Its original position is unknown, but it probably stood on a Celtic hill grave. The four human masks on the column and the hemispheric base are well-known symbols from the Mediterranean area; they protect the burial place. The column originally stood 2.8 m high. It is one of few large stone sculptures north of the Alps from this period and one of the most important cultural monuments of the prehistoric Rhineland.
