Hi Angie...I ought really to have said who I was (almost) quoting from...one of my favourite authors, AA Milne!

I knew I'd heard it before, PAB. :-) Was it Pooh?

I see there's another "thinker" from the same culture - "The Thinker of Tarpesti".

Wow! Beautiful!

They belong to two different neolithic cultures. The Hamangia Thinker belongs to the Hamangia culture (5200-4200 BC) which mostly occupied the west regions of the Black Sea. The Tarpesti Thinker belongs to the Cucuteni culture (4800-3000 BC) which was located in present day Moldova region of Romania, Moldova country, and parts of Ukraine.

I think the Hamangia Thinker's uniqueness comes from its complexity and fine craftsmanship.

An interesting article about the neolithic cultures in Romania can be found here: https://romaniadacia.wordpress.com/2014/05/08/neolithic-wonders-cucuteni-hamangia-gumelnita/ It contains some interesting artifacts and stories.

The Tarpesti Thinker appears to come from a Pre-Cucuteni culture, which would make it the same time period as the Hamangia one, although 400km away from Cernavoda.

I wonder what the cultural route to Cycladic figurines was, about 1000 years later.

I think pre-Cucuteni refers to the early period of the Cucuteni which spanned between 4800-4000 BC. Maybe a bit earlier. Anyways, it is very difficult to date them exactly and they definitely overlapped.

Your question is however very interesting. If I were to speculate: Given the complexity of the two figurines I would say that either Hamangia was more elaborate (advanced?) or the other was an imitation (or cheaper version) due to trading and cultural links. Or perhaps less likely, an initial version which would make things really interesting.

On a practical level, I wondered if the female figure's arms (above) are made to hold something? They look as if they'd support some sort of (possibly) devotional object, etc., otherwise why would her elbows be raised so high?
