Description
1915
This shot from across the Downs was taken from the rise of the north run on Byway-12, a short distance up from the future A-344. The present Visitor's Center would be off to the right.
In what appears to be early summer we see two Companies of wagons out on the Plain between sprinkled hay bales and grazing sheep. No doubt bound for France, their Captain keeps a close eye on the formation from horseback.
In the distance, morning fog on Stonehenge Bottom backlights the Heelstone and the telegraph poles supporting S-30 & S-1.
In just about the photo's center is detected the A-11 Bell Barrow, set against a looming, still tree-shrouded King's Barrow Ridge.

Triangulating the 'shoot-position' of this photograph shows that the trees beyond the A-11 Bell Barrow cannot be the King's Ridge. Those Barrows would be out-of-frame to the extreme left on the North side of the A-344, seen snaking up the rise.
