According to Wright and Valencia Zegarra's The Machu Picchu Guidebook: A Self-Guided Tour (Revised edition, 2004) the splitting process seen here was created by a modern archaeologist (using methods of ancient Egypt) as a test. It is not indicative of the work of Inca masons.
