Plus of course, a few sheep for Cerrig. We'd love to meet you there! Sem (1 comment - Vote or comment on this photo)

Although it was busy at Rhossili, most people seemed more interested in the beach than megaliths - not surprising given the weather. Over the course of the weeekend we had about a dozen "hard" enquiries and two people for a walk to Sweyne's Howe on the Sunday morning. One major coup though was the lady running the National Trust shop where we were partly based. She was looking to put some archaeological walks together for NT and will now be using MegP for her research into these.
All in all, a very enjoyable weekend and a sun tan to boot.

Thanks a lot for being there Sem - and Peter and all in the heat. Did you meet any other Portal members or was it all new people?

Despite my best intentions of being at the Gower meet for the weekend, my left knee took exception to somethnig while in France last week following Le Tour. It was improving, but has suffered a setback agin today, so unless the Welsh Government can guarantee me a new one under their new system, I'll have to pull out of the weekends events.

All being well, I may yet be able to get out there for a part of the weekend. If I dont make it, sorry Sem, PAB et all, hope it all goes well, don't get too sunburned, and I'll have to arrange another time over to your side of the bridge.

Last Saturday (13/7), C and myself had the pleasure of attending Nik Kalnins’ (Caradoc68) walk around Ham Hill. What a marvellous day! We had a walk around the northern spur in the morning, an early afternoon trip to Cadbury Castle and , after a water buffalo burger at the local Prince of Wales, a complete tour of Ham Hill’s ramparts - all accompanied by the sight-and-sound show that was Yeovilton’s Fleet Air Arm Show (think Lancasters, Spifires, a Vulcan and the Red Arrows and you get some idea).
Well done Nik.
For those of you who are free on the weekend of 27th -28th July, go and support Caradoc68 on what is the most informative and enjoyable archaeological day I have attended.

Pab and me were there on Thursday and did a few exploratory walks. The good news is that the area is dry and even better, seems destined to remain dry for the next two weeks. This means the vegetation that often covers the sites in Summer should be low.
A good chance to see some of the more "minor" stone settings.

Public Transport options!
There are bus services from Swansea to Rhossili on both the Saturday and Sunday, and the guided walks will be timed to ensure that people travelling by bus can do so.

The Gower Sunday Explorer Service details can be found here

Sounds like a good idea, how expensive is the Rhossili car park, or is there any other parking? I seem to remember it gets very busy there on summer weekends.

The main car park was £3 per day this week.....but I wonder whether that might go up for the peak time. Motorhomes were £5.

The car park does get busy at summer weekends, but they have a couple of overflow fields as well.

There is a small car park at the church with a donation box, but that fills up very early.

The nice thing about the Sunday Explorer is the fact that it links up from Rhossili to Llangennith, as well as going passed Arthur's Stone, so it is possible to get to quite a few of the prime locations with a bit of help.

And, for holders of Welsh concessionary cards, it's also free of course! Unfortunately, bus passes aren't valid across borders, so I can't/won't be able to use mine in England, and English/Scottish ones aren't valid in Wales....just wanted to avoid embarrassment!

Re Gower Event
Given that the Welsh Assembly Government has tonight passed a bill of presumed consent for organ donation, I would caution any visitors to this ancient and venerated land to make sure you have the readies when crossing the Severn Bridge. If not they'll probably rip out your liver (or something else in the case of The Captain!) in lieu of payment!!?!
Woody Guthrie was obviously aware of this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=46mO7jx3JEw
Welcome to Wales

I wouldn't worry Sem , we don't want Sasnaeg spare parts, they'd never make it past Gwladys in quality control. Although the cockiness that was removed from the English rugby team in the 6 nations ( as part of a pilot study ) is still being looked at , just for the fun of it.

If I were to attend may I wear my Gloucester Rugby shirt? Or would the price be my liver and other bits of offal?

John, I think with all your contributions you are entitled to a Megalithic Portal T Shirt. You might blend in better that way! Contact me if you would like one. The same goes for any other major site and photo contributors who I may have overlooked. Andy
