Re: Ritland barrow cemetery by kenntha88 on Tuesday, 06 October 2015

When I visited this beautiful site in 2012 I was not able to enter into the fenced in area, this time however i was able to ask the local farmer and get a permission to enter the enclosure and photograph this site in more detail. The barrow cemetery is huge and among one of the best preserved in Rogaland. When I studied the barrows in more detail I could see that several of them had a circle of larger stones around the edges and some are actually cairns but has been overgrown with grass so they appear like mounds.

7 large cairns and 6 smaller ones are located close together in a group in the center of the cemetery almost edge to edge. A line of large barrows are located on a line from north west to south east along the west edge of the large natural terrace while five larger cairns are located on a line on the east part of the site. In between these collections there are several other barrows spread around and the largest one is a single barrow a little to the west of the center.

I was also able to visit the remains of the settlement at the river edge to the south, but I will publish these photos in a different site.

Something is not right. This message is just to keep things from messing up down the road
