Re: Conkwell by kernunos on Friday, 15 April 2005

A settlement has stood here since Saxon times, but the current well house is much more recent in origin. It is situated at the bottom of a steep street, in fact the only street in the village, near to a house called 'Cromwell's Rest'. Oliver Cromwell is said to have rested here between battles and his men are said to have poisoned all of the wells in the area other than this one.

There are no known saints associations with this well but it is believed to have been used as a wishing well. But then many such wells that were so central to all aspects of rural village life were used for more than just drawing drinking water and washing clothes.

Something is not right. This message is just to keep things from messing up down the road
