'River' coppiced hazel and ash sculpture currently on show by Andy B on Tuesday, 04 October 2011

River: Harting Down OS map ref: SU797174

At Harting Down you can walk down RIVER, a 90m avenue of coppiced hazel and ash, flowing lines of shadow and light. Situated in a secluded valley off the South Downs Way, RIVER is inspired by the ancient deer hunt, prehistoric ritual structures, and the river that originally formed the valley after the last ice age.

Designed and built by Red Earth lead artists Caitlin Easterby and Simon Pascoe, working with a team of craftsmen from Brighton and the Harting area, with a lot of help from the Friends of Wolstonbury, SDJC volunteers, and Mind. The sculptures are made from local greenwood, coppiced on site, contemporary art works made using traditional methods.
