Re: Tapada del Anta Dolmen by DrewParsons on Wednesday, 05 May 2010

Tapada del Anta Dolmen is located in a remote part of western Spain near the town of Valencia de Alcántara. Its not really near a village, being out in the country. From Valencia de Alcántara drive south towards Portugal and at the end of the town take the CC98 / CC107 rural road towards La Fontaňera. After a kilometre take the right fork to stay on the CC98. After approximately 700 metres there is an earth road running to the right with a sign indicating that it is the dolmen trail. Take this earth road. After 2.5 kilometres reach a T junction and here turn left (south). The narrower earth road bends round to the right and after 300 meters or so there is a junction with a lane coming from the left. Park here by the sign pointing towards the ridge south south east of this junction. There was another sign on the gate on the left side of this side road directing you towards the ridge. Follow a plethora of tracks through the bush (woods for northern hemisphere folk) to find the dolmen 300 metres from the gate on the ridge. The coordinates that I recorded with a hand held GSP at the site are: 39.39671N and 07.30010W.

This is a wonderful dolmen is a remote location. No noise of traffic and no buildings visible from the site. It is one of my favourites. Built in the typical local style with mutually supporting inward leaning orthostats and a delicate capstone, it is in excellent condition and well worth the effort trying to find it. Hopefully my directions will make it much easier to locate for the next visitor!! April 2010.
