I have heard some talk that this could be a medieaval sheepfold. I suppose the intention may have been (if it is a circle) to be viewed from above along the track that now holds the top of the valley which could have been the original ridgeway route to Abbotsbury. The poor lot cemetary is in a similar valley floor location and was clearly intended to be viewed from above as travellers descended from the old ridgeway now the a35. The nearby hampton down circle is also comprised of probably smaller stones than V.O.S.
I wonder what the experts think?
