Group of sarson stones in Walderslade woods.
There has been some speculation that they might be the remains of either a stone circle or burial chamber.

Walking through the woods today I came across these stones and immediately recognised them as being megalithic. I also noticed the working and apparent drawing on one of the stones and am very interested in the academic paper, I too think they should be further researched and protected, lest someone moves them like the ones in Lordswood. I would be happy to support anyone in this process.

The stone nearest the footpath appears to show a representation of The Plough group of stars with a cup and ring mark corresponding to the position of M81 - Bodes Galaxy, where supernovae can sometimes be seen from Earth. I have written a paper about this and the stone's relationship to other ancient stone sites in the locality. If I am right, this is the oldest, clearly recognisable star map known in the World and comes from the same era of time as the cave paintings in France. It would appear to have been preserved by being buried in the mud and is only now visible because it was lifted onto one edge to make way for a footpath. It may have been re-used to make a Neolithic tomb, of which there are several examples nearby. The paper is at:

I have just submitted a paper about these stones to an academic website. I think these stones may be of great archaeological significance and should be protected, as should the other megalithic stones in the area, many of which have been either disturbed, damaged or destroyed. The link to the paper is at https://www.academia.edu/32812217/Possible_stone_age_star_map_in_Kent

The stone closest to the path has cup and ring marks and is a parish boundary stone. Whatever the origin of this group of stones, these are two indicators of antiquity for one of the stones at least.

Possible Stone Circle in Kent. This is a small group of recumbent stones in Tunbury Woods (part of Walderslade Woods.) There are cup and ring marks on the stones and a few smaller outliers.

The stones have been overgrown at times with saplings, brambles and weeds but I have cleared them from time to time. I don't know of any historical associations with this site and they may very well be more or less natural. However, they are very close to the boundaries between the boroughs of Maidstone, Tonbridge and Malling and the Medway Unitary Authority - so they are at least historically significant as landmarks. They are in a small wooded valley and easy to reach, you just go to the end of Tunbury Avenue - the straight, oldest part, continue into the valley where the road becomes a path and turn left at the bottom of the valley. The stones are visible a few yards after turning. Possibly because of their peaceful location they are the most charming of all the sarsens in the Tunbury area of Walderslade.
