Mega Cursus in Humberside
Status: Certain
NMR No. TA 06 NE 48
Extent: 4000mx50m
Terminal type: Trapezoidal
Note: This location marks one terminal (end) of a cursus monument. The location of the other terminal can be found in the Nearby Site list below.
The Northern Antiquarian (TNA) also features a page for Rudston D Cursus - see their page for Rudston ‘D’ Cursus, East Yorkshire, giving the co-ordinates of the whole D cursus as running from TA 099 717 – TA 096 679. The TNA page also includes a plan of the line of the cursus and its associated monuments, plus descriptions from a number of modern and historical sources (please note these grid references are different to those given by Pastscape.
Pastscape also records this monument - see their page for Pastscape Monument No. 1036049 which covers the four cursi in the group, describing Cursus D as: "A fourth cursus 'D' occupies the floor of the Great Wold Valley, below the monolith, and runs northwards to a terminus immediately east of Burton Fleming. The date of the cursuses has still to be confirmed but Cursus 'A' must predate the secondary Beaker-accompanied burials in its southern terminus. TA 096679-TA 099717 ... The ends of both cursus B and D appear to be hidden by Rudston village. It could be suggested that they are two parts of the same cursus which bends through an angle of about 60 degrees, though this seems unlikely. "
This monument is scheduled as Historic England List ID 1005223, but being generated from an Old County Number, contains largely only the heading, which reads "Earthwork on the Sheepwalk stretching N from Wold Gate for 530yds (480m)."
