Barrow Cemetery in Yorkshire (North)

A group of five bronze age round barrows collectively known today* as Stony Marl Howes, they are located on the southern/northern flank of Howdale/ Stony Marl Moor and are in a prominent position with good all round views. Referring to the uploaded sketch map they themselves also stand out clearly in the landscape except for barrow ‘B’ which is mainly destroyed. Basic details of the barrows with map references from my gps are as below:

‘A’ at NZ 95527 00606 – Standing 1m high and 16m in diameter, it has a deep hole in its centre where it has been robbed out in the past. Also it looks to me that it has been trenched from the east side.

‘B’ at NZ 95624 00678 – It is flat topped standing 0.4m high and 12m in diameter and described by one official record as almost destroyed. However even in the deep heather I noted a slight rise in the ground and had no problem locating it.

‘C’ at 95699 00725 – Standing 1.2m high and 18m in diameter, with a robbed out centre. Also it has a flat top but still stands out clearly in the landscape.

‘D’ at NZ 95777 00723 – Standing 1.4 m high and 19m in diameter with a robbed out centre

‘E’ at NZ 95793 00709 – Standing 1.8m in diameter and 21m in diameter with a robbed out centre and the remains of a cist. Also it looks like there are kerb stones on the south east side

N.B. Sources (official records) as listed below, differ in their stated dimensions of the barrows in some cases substantially. Also all official records say that the remains of the cist is in the northern of the two easterly barrows, that is barrow ‘D’ at NZ 95777 00723. However it looks to me that the remains of the cist is actually in barrow ‘E’ at NZ 95793 00709. As regards barrows ‘D’ and ‘E’, though dimensions given in the records are quite different, they both look of a very similar size to me and if anything ‘E’ bigger than ‘D’ which is opposite to what Historic England says. (as of November 2022)

Sources:
Stony Marl Howes (all barrows) is ‘HERR’ MONUMENT 29613
Historic England List Entries for the barrows are ‘A’ - No.1019691, ‘B’ - No.1019692, ‘C’ - No.1019693, ‘D’ & ‘E’ No.1019694

* Prior to OS mapping in 1849 this group of barrows appears to have been named the Three Howes as shown on the Robert Knox map of 1820 which can be viewed HERE, with according to the ‘HERR’ source one of the eastern barrows being singled out as the ‘Old Wife’s Howe’

I have had second thoughts about ‘C’ and in fact its more than likely ‘D’ with ‘C’ actually being obscured by the rise in the ground at ‘B’ (Vote or comment on this photo)

Stony Marl Howes submitted by johndhunter : Barrow ‘B’ at NZ 95624 00678 – Viewed looking westerly, October 2022. The arrow indicates a pole which marks the approximate centre of the barrow. Whilst this barrow is covered in deep heather and mainly destroyed, at the site itself and with the naked eye it is not too difficult to make out its location, there being a discernable rise in the ground. This is an extensive prehistoric landscape which beside containing the usual barrows, cairns, standing stones etc. is also prolific with rock art. The edge of this moor also has sweeping views overlooking Robin Hoods Bay.
