Re: Scamridge Long Barrow by Anonymous on Monday, 30 April 2007
I walked along the long barrow April 28th 2007 - a considerable length of it is passes through woodland and is consequently overgrown. It reminds me of Offers dyke on the welsh border which I gather was built more to define a border than for defence. Scamridge seems to cover about 1/2- the circumference of a very large circle - diameter of about a mile - and also consists of several ditches running in parallel to each other. At first sight this looks more defensive. Is there anything known about when it was built and for what purpose.
