TheCaptain visited on 20th Sep 2024 - their rating: Cond: 2 Amb: 4 Access: 3 I had an hour or so to spare, but it was foggy on the moor so had to be careful where I went. Decided that having a look for the stones beside the road from Goathland was sensible, then maybe over to the roman road. A closer look at the Mega Portal map showed this (possible) stone circle fairly near, and not far from what appeared to be a decent path, so I gave it a go. Perhaps stupidly, as I had deemed it not far, I went without my bag, therefore no paper map or compass, relying on the phone app alone in the fog, something I would never have done in the past. Anyways, it was a decent track up to the top of the hill, so then came time to hunt for the stones, as seen on the portal. I proceeded across the open moor from the path to where marked on the portal map, but nothing. So call up the portal site page and see that the accuracy rating was not good, but that comments from JohndHunter did give a better reference. Now a fair distance from the track which would lead me back, and in very limited visibility, I was unsure of proceeding in case my battery went flat or I lost the signal, but my curiosity got the better of me, aided by the thought that all I needed to do was head back in the direction I had come, keeping the hill edge to my right and at some point I would get to the track. Anyways, all worked out just fine, and I found the stones as seen in the pictures. At first they just seemed like a jumble of mostly large stones laying on the ground, but then I got to a point where a good arc of stones could be made out, or maybe several arcs. A few of the stones were definitely once standing and set into the ground. Having seen the Bridestones, and in the past Commondale, I personally decided that this indeed could once have been a stone circle. The fog was getting thicker, not aided by it starting to get dark, so I decided to head back, across the moor to the track and then back down to the car, all in taking about an hour. All was good, and I had a real feeling of achievement, so went for a well deserved pint at the Mallyan Spout Hotel.

Possible Stone Circle in North Yorkshire

I searched for this circle for some time in a large area strewn with stones. I believe these two stones and the two in the distance form part of the circle but I am open to correction.

Pastscape has information on a stone circle in this vicinity which I presume is the one Kelpie went looking for in 2002 when he submitted this site page. It is Monument 62885 and was last updated in 2012. The main thing to keep in mind is that they cite an English Heritage Alternative Action Report which states “Since the definition of the circle is poor and the interpretation is uncertain, the site is not considered nationally important on present evidence.”

It was first noted in 1949 after a moorland fire by R.H.Hayes who described it as the possible remains of a stone circle 97ft in diameter and gave its location as SE 8161 9812. It would appear he made an error and Field Investigations in 1974 deemed the more likely place was 100m further north at SE 81611 98221. The description they give of this circle is as follows “Amongst the visible stones and boulders there are several that appear to be earthfast. A low bank of earth and stone was identified describing an intermittent circle of approximately 30 metres in diameter, with substantial gaps in the perimeter to the west, northeast and southeast. The potential circle was most clearly identified at the northwest, where a 30 metre length was visible with stones and boulders apparently set into it. Two more segments were identifiable: on the southwest side of the circle, the bank was very ephemeral and had only one earthfast stone set into it, and on the east there was a concentration of stones, including some apparently earthfast.”

I could not make out anything like this at the grid ref (SE 81611 98221) and it is not the possible stone circle in the image (PID 967) submitted by Kelpie at SE 81728 98194 which is about 100m to the east. As regards Kelpies image and what he thinks is possibly part of a stone circle, I am afraid to say even with my vivid imagination I could not conjure up anything which looked like part of a stone circle at this location. By contrast in an area about halfway between Pastscapes Grid Ref and Kelpies Grid Ref (approx 100m apart) the moor is strewn with stones and it doesn’t take much for ones imagination to start seeing circles and parts of circles. However, though I could see stones set in low banks and what I thought were parts of circles I could not match anything up to pastscapes description but then again one has to keep in mind that I am an only an amateur with an untrained eye, experts will see things that I can not.

I ended up visiting this site four times in as many weeks trying to make head or tail of it, in the end I gave up. I sense there is something here it just needs a more expert eye than mine to see it, a good place to start is a large stone at SE 81654 98214, which possibly forms part of a southern arc of a large circle. Will post images of the area in question to see what others make of it

Will try to find House Crag Circle (if that is indeed what it is!) but 2 stones do not make a circle and should not be described as such without reference to history, pictorial evedence or excavation... Who put this on the site as a Circle in the first place?
