Stone Row / Alignment in Yorkshire (North)
Surrounded by bog and swamp it is located on a patch of very exposed slightly higher ground on Lealholm Moor known as Temple Beeld Hill. It consists of five large standing stones which Stanhope White in his 1982 booklet “Standing Stones and Earthworks of the North Yorkshire Moors” page 14 “assumes” to have been erected about 1500BC. The layout is such that Stanhope White describes it as forming a cross and is said to be similar to a construction in Scotland also called a Temple. Sometime during the last couple of hundred years the gaps between the five stones here described for ease of reference as north, central, south, east and west have been filled in with dry stone walling to provide a refuge for the sheep (normally called a bield but in this instance it is beeld). The wall between the north, south and central stone is straight as they are in alignment however the east, west and central stones are not and when building the wall they curved it towards the centre from both the east and west stones. In reality only the section of the wall between the southern and central stones remains intact. The other walls are in a dilapidated state with in places only the lower stones left to show its shape. This can be seen very clearly on Google Earth, it really stands out. I see it as been shaped like the curved hilt of a sword or dagger. Older OS 6 inch to the mile maps also show it with this distinctive shape. I make the north /south alignment as 330° 150°.The eastern stone from the central stone as 70 ° and the western stone from the central stone as 220°. There is inter visibility with the central round barrow on Thorn Hill (NZ 76150 10384) and whilst the other two round barrows in the Thorn Hill area are now totally denuded and not even included in the scheduling there would have been inter visibility in their heyday. It is also inter visible with Brown Rigg Howe
